You are visiting with us again. We want you to know that we’re honored by your presence, and we hope that you’ll come back at every opportunity That you have, what the wish Happy father’s day to all the fathers that are here, and certainly appreciate you being here. And this morning, we’re going to talk about fathers and father’s day. The first father’s day we are told,
took place in Spokane, Washington, June the 19th, 1910, at least that’s the first one. That’s recognized. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third, Sunday in June as being today, A day in which to give honor to fathers. And that was in 1924. So we are Right at 95 years of recognizing fathers on the third Sunday, But why,
why should we Even take the time to worry about it other than hopefully the love and respect that we have for fathers, But certainly It is emphasized throughout scripture concerning the fact that we are to honor both father and mother. You turn to Exodus chapter 20 and in verse 12 there Moses says honor, thy father and thy mother that die days may be long about the land,
which the Lord thy God gives us. And so here was Of, or it was a command that was given by God, through Moses, to the children of Israel, that they were to honor both father and mother. And notice. There’s an explanation that is given here as to why that’s to take place that died days may be long upon the land,
which the Lord, thy God given the, so there is a promise here that their days would be long if they would do this as they are in the promised land. When you turn to Deuteronomy chapter five and in verse 16, there Moses restates, essentially the same thing when he says honor, thy father and thy mother, as the Lord, God had commanded thee that die days may be prolonged and that it may go well with the,
in the land, which the Lord, thy God give it The, and so Again, Moses tells the children of Israel shortly before they enter into the promised land that they are to honor their father and their mother. And again, gives the promise that their days might be prolonged. Well, why in the world would he make that statement? Why is it that Moses that God through Moses would state concerning the fact that their days would be prolonged if they honored their father and their mother?
Well, you turn to Deuteronomy chapter 21. And here is a perfect example as to why he said what he said in Deuteronomy chapter 21, they’re beginning with verse 18. Moses says, if a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and that when they have chastened, him will not hearken under them.
Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him and bring him out under the elders of the city of his city and under the gate of his place. And they shall say under the elders of his city, this, our son is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey our voice. He is a glutton and a drunkard and all the men of his city shall stone him with stones that he die.
So shalt thou put evil away from among you and all Israel shall hear and fear. See the promise was made that if they would honor their father and their mother, which means they would obey them, then they would live longer lives than if they don’t. Because part of God’s law said that if you had a son that was stubborn and rebellious would not obey his father or his mother,
then he was to be brought to the elders of the city. They’re at the gate of the city to make that proclamation, that accusation against their son. And then their son was to be stoned to death. Okay. I can’t imagine fathers and mothers having to do that, but I would venture to say, we have known in our lifetime, those who could have been stoned to death because of their rebellious Snus against their fathers and their mothers.
In fact, maybe even some of us wouldn’t be here if we were under that particular law. But the fact of the matter is that’s the reason that the promise has given unto them that their lives might be prolonged, that they might live long lives in the land that God was going to give to them. You come to the new Testament, visions chapter six,
and in verse two, where Paul says, speaking to children, honor, thy father and thy mother, which is the first commandment with promise again, what is the promise that you might live long, that you might have a prolonged life as was given in the old Testament? It’s not a part of the law of the new Testament, but still he reminds them concerning that,
which God required under the old Testament law. When you turn to Matthew chapter 15, verses one through nine, there Jesus is going to interact with those who are Pharisees, because they are going to make accusations against the apostles, which ultimately is an accusation against Jesus himself. In Matthew chapter 15 beginning with verse one, Matthew says then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees,
which were of Jerusalem saying, why did I disciples transgress the tradition of the elders for they wash, not their hands when they eat bread, but he answered and said unto them, why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition for God commanded saying honor, thy father and mother, and he, that curses father or mother, let him die the death.
But ye say whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, it is a gift by whatsoever thou mitis be profited by me and honor not his father or his mother. He shall be free. Thus, have you made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition? Ye hypocrites. Well, did his ASMR prophesied of you saying this people draw nigh unto me with their mouth and honor me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me, but in vain they do worship me teaching for doctrine, the commandments of men. And so here through the scribes and the Pharisees, the traditions of the elders was held to be of more importance, having more authority than the word of God. And they sought to give the people away out from honoring their father and their mother with the means whereby they could help them and assist them.
And it’s talking about at this particular time, those that would probably be older in age and yet it was such that they were disrespecting their father and their mother by the tradition that the elders had passed down and Jesus condemns them for this and speaks concerning the fact that their worship is vein is worthless. It is of no value at all. They, because of the fact they’re teaching for doctrine,
the commandments of men, rather than holding to the teachings of God. So this morning, I want us to spend some time examining fathers and noticing how important fathers are. And it is important that we speak concerning this because in our day in time in our society, in our country, So many Fathers are not doing what they are supposed to be doing.
So many homes do not even have the father in the home Many times Because he chooses not to be there. But also there are those times when he’s not living the way that he should and therefore they don’t want to be around him. But the fact of the matter is fathers are extremely important as far as the home is concerned. And so we need to,
first of all, acknowledge that the father is certain things as spoken of in scripture. First of all, he is the head of the whole. He is the head of the whole, and he has that right to be the head of the home. You go all the way back to Genesis chapter one and two. And there, we have the institution of the first home with Adam and Eve,
and God is the one who set it up. And it is such that both father and mother are expected to be in the hole in order for the home to function the way that it is supposed to. But it is such that the father is the one who is the head. You turn to first Corinthians chapter 11. And in verse three, as the apostle,
Paul is writing to the church at Korea. And he says, but I would have, you know, that the head of every man is Christ. And the head of the woman is the man. And the head of Christ is God. The head of the woman is man. Paul says, and he’s not saying that woman is inferior as a result of that,
but it is just the way that God set things up just as Jesus is not inferior to God, the father, even though God, the father was over Jesus. And that is the point that the apostle Paul maze. And so it is such that man has that right, is given that right by God to be the head over the home. When you turn over to Ephesians chapter five,
as Paul is going to speak concerning The husband and wife relationship and you using that. So as to teach concerning the relationship between Christ and his bride, the church, he says there in verse 23 for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church. And he is the savior of the body. Paul says,
the husband is the head of the wife. And yet, As we stated in so many homes, there is no head. There is no head as God designed it as God intended for it to be when he writes, when Paul writes to Timothy in first Timothy chapter two, and in verse 13, he tells us that the reason that man has the head is because man was first formed then Eve.
And so he goes all the way back to the garden of Eden to speak concerning the fact that God created man first. And that is the reason as to why he is to be the head. And then he created Eve the wife of Adam. And so by right of creation, Paul says, man is to be the head in the hole, but also by right,
because as Paul is going to explain it, the woman was deceived and not the man. When you look at Genesis chapter three, and in verse six, there we read concerning Eve and how that she looked upon that fruit that God had told her and told Adam, they were not to eat it. Neither were they to touch it less. They die.
And yet she looked at that fruit and she saw that it was good to eat. It was desired to make one wise, it was pleasant to the eyes. And so she went ahead and ate it. And then she gave to her husband, Adam, who was there as well. Paul says in first or first Timothy chapter two would in verse 14,
the very next verse that we noted just a moment ago, he says how that Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression, Adam sin, yes. For eating of the fruit. But he wasn’t deceived. He did it with his eyes. Wide open is basically what God’s account says after his wife, Eve ate of it.
And the indication seems to be anyway, that Adam knowing that they’re having given names to all the animals, God having paraded all the animals in front of him, giving names to all the animals and realizing there was not one that was suitable to him to be a companion, to be a mate. They, God then made Eve. And so knowing that when Eve eats of this fruit,
Adam is as I think from what is stated here, he’s basically saying, well, there’s nothing I can do, but go ahead and need it as well. If she’s going to die, then I might just as well die. I don’t have anybody else. And so he goes ahead and eats of it, but it is stated by Paul, that he was not deceived.
He knew what he was doing, but Eve was deceived in what she did, which has given as a reason as to why the man is the head in the home, rather than the woman, again, going all the way back to the garden of Eden. And so man, as God has set up the home is the one who has dominion. He is the one who has authority.
He is the one who has the final say the rule in the home. If it is the home, the way that God designed it, we know that every organization on earth has to have someone who’s out there in the lead. Someone who is the head, it’s that way in the business world. It’s that way as well in the institution that God set up.
As far as the home is concerned, somebody has to be in the lead. And it doesn’t mean that nobody else is as important or is inferior to the one that is in the lead. It’s just that he has the responsibility or she, depending on the way that it is today in the business world has the responsibility of being the head well in the home,
he is the one who has that authority. He is the one who has that dominion has given to him by God. And therefore he is to be the leader in the whole Being in the home. That husband is to be a loving man. He is to be one who loves God. He is the, be one who loves his wife. He is to be one who loves his children.
And he is one who is supposed to guide the home as a loving father would in being in leadership again. And if he shouldn’t chapter five, verse 25, Paul says, the husbands love your wives. Even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it. So he shows us that we are to have as husbands. We are to love our wives the same way that Jesus loved the church and that he gave himself.
He gave his own life for his bride, the church, that’s the kind of love that a husband is to have for his wife. You dropped down to verses 28 and 29. So odd men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife, loveth himself for no man ever yet hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it even as the Lord,
the church. And so again, the, the lesson that is being taught by the apostle Paul in that husbands are to love their wives. The way that Christ loved his church and to nourish and to cherish one’s wife, just as Jesus did for the church. You go back to Genesis chapter 18, and God has a great statement that he makes concerning Abraham there.
In verse 19, he says for, I know him that he will command his children and his household after him. And they shall keep the way of the Lord to do justice and judgment that the Lord may bring upon Abraham, that, which he has spoken of him. Abraham is commended by God here, God saying, I know him. I know the kind of man he is.
I know that the kind of father that he is, and I know the kind of leader that he’s going to be. And he commends Abraham for that, that those that are of his household are those that are going to follow after him in following after the Lord, Peter will speak concerning this as well. At first Peter chapter three, and in verse six,
when he says, even as Sarah obeyed Abraham calling him Lord whose daughters gr as long as you do well and are not afraid with any amazement. And so here, Peter goes back to the time of Abraham and refers to the way that Sarah looked upon Abraham calling him Lord, recognizing the authority, recognizing his headship in the hole, and those who would follow after her in doing those same things are those who were commended by the apostle Peter.
So the father is the head of the whole emphasize throughout scripture. That that is the case with the father is also to train his children, to train his children as is taught in the scriptures. When you look at Ephesians chapter six and in verse four, where he was talking concerning children in the first three verses in verse four, he says that he fathers provoke,
not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture. And the admonition of the Lord, their responsibility is given to the fathers to be the ones who bring their children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. In the training of the word of God. It is the fathers who are given that responsibility. The, the commandment is not given to mothers,
even though they play a very important part in the home. And we do not put that down in any way, shape or form yet the main responsibility for the teaching and the training is that that is given unto the fathers. The wise man, Solomon says in the book of Proverbs chapter 19, and in verse 18, he says, chasten die son.
While there is hope and let not die, soul spare for his crying. And again, he speaking concerning fathers here, that is the father’s responsibility to do the training. And even though that may not be such, that he has to do all the teaching yet, he is the one who is to train them. So as to I told them in the way that they should go and it takes the father to do that,
that’s the very point that Solomon is bringing out that God brings out with Solomon, therefore Proverbs chapter 22. And in verse six, train up a child in the way he should go. And when he is old, he will not depart from it. Sometimes that verses used to speak to parents concerning the fact that if you teach your children, if you bring them the Bible class,
whenever we have Bible classes, your children will never depart from the faith. That’s not the context of what he’s talking about. He’s talking about treating them to and training them to be men, to be those who are the leaders, to be those who are the ones that are to be the heads in their home and even their livelihood. It was such that if a father did not teach his children at a livelihood,
a job whereby he could support his family, he was a one who was neglecting the law of God in doing such, but it also includes that of teaching them as far as the law of God is concerned as far as religious matters. But sometimes we say, well, it must be something deficient in, in their training, in their religious training, that this particular individual ended up going off and,
and not continuing to be faithful in the God. That’s not necessarily the case. Sometimes mother and dad can do everything that is right and acceptable. Just like there in Deuteronomy chapter 21, the indication is they, they are punished the, the son and yet he still re refuse to be obedient unto his father or his mother. He was called a stubborn and rebellious child.
And therefore is a result of that. He was taken before the elders of the city at the city gate. And there he was stoned to death. Mother and father did everything they could, but that child has a mind of his own and a determination as to whether or not he’s going to accept the training that is given unto him. And sometimes children,
don’t father and mother are not necessarily to be blamed for that. Now, if the teaching and the training has not been done, then certainly they do bear responsibility for that. But it does not always mean that the child is going to be obedient to the gospel of Christ and the faithful unto death. The major influence of course, in children’s lives is generally the mothers.
And yet it is the fathers who have the responsibility of being the head over the home and being the one who is responsible for giving the training to the children. Paul again says in second Timothy chapter one, and in verse five in writing to Timothy and, and remembering concerning Timothy and his background, he says, when I called to remembrance, the unfeigned faith that is in thee,
which dwelt first in my grandmother, Lois, and my mother Eunice, I am persuaded that in the also Paul knew the background of Timothy. He knew that Timothy’s father was a Greek, and therefore there is no indication at all that Timothy’s father had any bearing on the religious training of Timothy. He was not a Jew was not concerned with what the law of God taught concerning religious training.
And so therefore his mother Eunice with the help of her mother, Lois were ones who took up the responsibility in order to train Timothy. And they did a good job in doing that, but still the responsibility was upon his father to do that who was unwilling to do that, even in his own life too often, though, men have passed off the responsibility of doing the training to the wife,
passed it off to the wife, to be responsible for that. And yet, again, even though she has a great deal of influence over the children, that responsibility is given to the husband. And many times when the husband does not carry the responsibility, the way that he should, he is going to be one who will try to pass it off either to the wife or he’s going to pass it off to the church,
pass it off to the government, pass it off to the schools, whatever it may be. And yet God still holds him as being the one that’s. How many times have you heard? I know I have where Members of the church have criticized the church. They let my child turn away from the truth. They were deficient in their teaching in some Way,
and yet it’s not The church’s responsibility to train your children. We do provide Bible classes to help and to assist you in order to carry out that training. But it’s not the church’s responsibility. As far as the local congregation, it’s the home’s responsibility. It’s the father’s response Disability. And it is the father who is to be the one that will be held accountable for that.
We cannot even blame society if children go wrong, because it is, Is such that it is a responsibility that lies with the father in the family. And yet we also recognize that once a child reaches a certain point, he’s responsible for his own actions. And that’s why We speak often concerning the fact that one has to be reach an age of accountability before becoming a Christian,
to be able to know the difference between right and wrong. And so it is that the father is to chain the children yet, Certainly one of the greatest ways that he can train his children as being the right kind of example, in front of them. The right kind of example, as far as a father is concerned, the right kind of example,
as far as the husband is concerned, the right kind of example, as far as a Christian is concerned. And if father is not willing to be the example to be in the lead, then don’t be surprised if the children don’t follow. And we’ve seen that happen so many times, The father is the head to the home. He is to train his children,
but also he is to provide for his family, Is to provide for his family. When Paul would write to Timothy again in first Timothy chapter five, they’re an inverse eight Timothy says, but if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an infidel. It’s interesting that Paul is going to make this statement.
And yet he makes this statement in the context of speaking concerning widows, those that the church should assist. And those that the church should not be responsible for assisting because they have others. They have sons and grandsons, and those who can help to assist them to where the church could not be charged would not have to be charged. And Paul says in that context,
if any, provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an infidel. Certainly that goes for the man’s home itself as well. Not only his mother aged mother would be the indication here, but also for his own family. And that responsibility is such that he is the one who is responsible for providing the food and the clothing and the,
the roof over the head and those kinds of things for his family. I find It also interesting that when you back up just a few pages in your Bible to second Thessalonians, chapter three, and in verse 10, a passage that we don’t talk about very much necessarily. And yet Paul says at the end of that verse, that if any would not work,
neither should eat. How many people, how many men, even that we know of in our society today are those who refuse to work. They look for any excuse that’s available to them. So as not to work and not to provide for their own. And Paul says, if he will not work, neither should he eat. And yet it is also the case that he is to provide for his own,
as he spoke up to Timothy. And it is the responsibility of all fathers as the head of their home, to bear that responsibility, to provide the financial means whereby the family can exist and exist the way that God would intend it to exist. Which also brings out the point that we’re not to squander Our money. We’re not to squander the money that we make on frivolous things.
Now we can buy things that are, That we desire, but not to the neglect of our family, not to the neglect of providing for our family, the way that we are supposed to. And yet, so many times we see that happening in the world today as well. And so the father, the father, according to scripture is the head of the home.
The father is the one who is re given the main responsibility of teaching and training the children in order to bring them up in the nurture and the admonition of the Lord. The father is given the responsibility to provide For the whole financially One who is willing to put forth the effort in order to make that available to them. Children, As Paul talks about there in Ephesians chapter six are to be those who honor father and mother.
But again, how is it that they do that? Is it simply by saying, I love you and then going off and doing whatever you want to, no, that’s not the way that we honor father or mother just as, it’s not the way that we honor God. But when You look at what the scriptures teach again, going back to the book of Proverbs chapter 23,
and in verse 22, Solomon says hearken unto thy father that begat thee and despise, not thy mother when she is old. So again, there is this idea of, Of honoring father and mother, And the responsibility carries forth even after they become Old aged. Paul, It says to the caution brethren and cloth in chapter three, and in verse 20 children obey your parents in all things for this as well,
pleasing unto the Lord, XE the re the way that children honor their father and their mother is to do what they’re told to obey them just as we noted from Deuteronomy chapter 21, that the son that didn’t honor his father and mother didn’t obey his father and mother, even after they chastised him was one who was brought before the elders. And he was stoned to death because he was stubborn and rebellious.
So it is that children, if they truly honor, father and mother are going to be those who will obey their father and mother. Now, this is assuming of course, that what they are told to do is that, which is right in acceptable. As far as the word of God is concerned. If they are instructed to do something, which is not in accordance with the scriptures,
they are not obligated to follow through and to obey their parents, but then the responsibility or the chastisement is brought to be brought upon the parents rather than the Child. But It is such that truly to honor them means to obey that, which is given to them that which is instructed of them by their father and their mother. Just as when we honor God,
we obey his commandments. We demonstrate the love that we have for God, by our obedience of the things that he tells to do, Which by the way, if we don’t do what he tells us to do, if we don’t live the kind of life he tells us we are supposed to live, then we are not one that is honoring God. We do not respect God.
And he does not respect us how important it is for us to recognize on this father’s day, not only the responsibility of fathers, but also the responsibility of the rest of the home, to the fathers. As given instructions through the scriptures. If you’re one who’s outside the body of Christ this morning, we encourage you to search the scriptures, to see what the Bible teaches,
what the new Testament teaches one must do in order to become a Christian. When you do that, you find that one must hear the word in order to believe it, John six, verse 45, and yet one must believe it. If he is to have hope of everlasting life, Mark chapter 16, verse 16, that he must be willing to rippit change of mind,
which brings about a change in action, a change in attitude and makes restitution where possible acts two verse 38. Then one must be willing to confess his faith in Christ that he believes that Jesus truly is the son of God. The living son of the living God, Matthew chapter 10, verse 32, and then be baptized, Be immersed in water in order to have your sins forgiven in order to be received the remission of your sins in order to be added to the body of Christ,
the church, which he purchased with his own blood acts, chapter two, verse 38 X 22, verse 16 and other paths. If you’re not Needing to do that, we encourage you to do it before it is eternally too late. Because once this life is over, it is eternally too late. If you’re one is already a member of the body of Christ,
but you’ve wandered off and gone back into the world, we plead with you to come back and repentance again, a change of mind, change of an attitude, change in direction, making restitution where possible and praying to God for forgiveness the beginning, again, walking in the way of righteousness.
